What our Alpine Region Offers

Our Alpine region, called Montafon, in the westernmost tip of Austria, offers excellent and varied winter and summer holidays.

winter

Montafon's 5 ski regions (Golm, Silveretta Montafon, Gargellen, Kristberg and Silveretta Bielerhöhe) include a total of 295 km of marked pistes with varying levels of difficulty that will delight alpine skiers and snowboarders of all abilities. The whole Montafon can be accessed with a single ski pass, which also includes use of the lifts in the neighboring valley (Brantnertal). The card can be purchased online in advance and on site at any of the base lift's lower stations. Winter sports equipment rental points are available in the main valley town of Schruns, as well as at selected locations near the base or upper lift stations. Drinks and refreshments are available at mountain restaurants and tavernas located at the top of the base lifts or at the side of the slopes. After a busy day on the mountain, one can enjoy a drink or two at one of the lift stations, where there is no shortage of après ski bars.

The network is served by 6 base lifts (carriages and gondola lifts), from which chairlifts and anchor lifts take passengers up to the pistes. This is a high quality and modern Doppelmayr lift infrastructure, where the newest gondolas and chairlifts are equipped with solar panels to keep the seats pleasantly warm on the longer routes.

Montafon is also popular with off-piste riders who like to ride on unprepared snow. The Silveretta Montafon region in particular offers such opportunities, where it is also possible to receive instruction, get accurate weather forecasts and hire a guide.

Cross-country skiers will also appreciate the winter sports opportunities in our valley, with a series of trails totaling around 90 km at their disposal in winter. Depending on the thickness of the snow cover in each winter, cross-country skiing can be practiced at different altitudes, from the level of our village to the slopes of Silveretta Bielerhöhe at around 2000 m above sea level. Around 67 km of pistes are groomed for classic-style skiers, and 29 km for cross-country skiers.

If you are not a skiing or snowboarding enthusiast, but love the fresh mountain air and being outdoor in winter, the Montafon Valley is also an attractive destination. In winter, you can spend a week or more here, sledging on specially designed alpine toboggan runs, using a ski lift, and hiking with snowshoes, or simply in winter hiking boots on. In some places, it is also possible to combine a winter hike up the mountain road with a toboggan run down.

In summer, Montafon welcomes hikers, trekking lovers, mountaineers, rock climbers, cyclists and mountain bike enthusiasts, as well as golfers and anglers.

For nature lovers and hikers, Montafon has over 1100 kilometers of mountain trails. There are 267 hiking routes of varying difficulty. In summer, 6 base lifts are in operation, taking guests through the wooded area to hiking trails higher up the mountain, closer to Alpine lakes, cliffs and peaks. Minibuses run on three routes, taking hikers to more remote mountain routes. More than 40 mountain restaurants and cafes are open to welcome hungry and thirsty travellers.

For routes that require mountaineering skills, such as the hike to the highest peak in the region, Piz Buin, or across one of the small glaciers of Montafon, the local tourist board offers guided group hikes. Tickets for guided hikes on a number of different routes can be bought online or at local tourist office. If you prefer to walk individually, enjoying the silence of the mountains, or in the company of friends, and without the use of ski lifts, you can set off on foot directly from our house. Our location at the foot of the Rätikon Ridge offers a range of easier and more challenging routes, from an hour and a half walk to a full day hike, for example to Ruine Valkastiel, Golmerjock, the so-called Schweizer Tor or Lünersee, one of the highest lakes in the Alps, right on the Swiss border. You can also shorten the route in this direction by using the shuttle minibus service.

Cycling enthusiasts will find well-marked cycleways and paths in Montafon, as well as 260 km of mountain bike routes. Various types of bicycles are available for hire, but guests arriving by private car often bring their own bikes. We offer our own garage for parking.

Rock climbers won't be bored in Montafon. After trying your hand at the rock climbing wall in Latschau, not far from our home, you can go on to forge new achievements by ascending one of the Via Ferrata, of which there is no shortage in Montafon. For example, at the Rif, Lindauer Hütte or Lorünser Wändle, or reach the summit of the Saula Peak via the cliff climbing route.

Ill is a river rich in trout which flows through the valley and our village to the Rhine. It is accessible to licensed angling. Angling licenses are available online or at the local sports shop. There is also a specially created fishing pond on the outskirts of the village. For fishing in high mountain lakes such as Lünersee and Silveretta Stausee, licenses can be bought online or at the nearest large mountain restaurant right by the lake. We offer a garden barbecue in our garden for grilling and enjoying the fish.

It's good right here!

For guests who are tired of their hectic everyday routine, it may not be attractive to spend every day on a long hiking route. Our village's open-air summer swimming pool complex, Rätikonbad Vandans, offers a more relaxing break - swimming in a pool with heated mountain river water suitable for all ages and abilities, sunbathing on the lawn with mountain views, enjoying a traditional Austrian schnitzel or an ice cream in the on-site restaurant. This is especially convenient for parents with small children. Our guests' children usually love the mountain roller-coaster rides too. It starts at the Golmerbahn interchange in Latschau and continues in loops for three kilometers all the way down to the village of Vandans. This activity is open to children from 3 years of age accompanied by an adult.

In the Montafon Valley, as in other parts of Austria, guests with dogs are welcome. Provided they are socialized and well-behaved, dogs can accompany their owners on the lifts and they are also added to the restaurant. A leash and muzzle are required. We also welcome guests with dogs in our house.

Day Tours

Given our convenient location in an area where 5 national borders are close to each other, we are happy to help our guests with itineraries for day trips to attractive destinations on the Swiss, Italian or German borders, as well as to Liechtenstein. For those arriving by their own car or by rental car from the nearest airport, it is quite realistic to visit all these neighboring countries within a week,
